Chies d'Alpago
|
|
Accessibility Dominated on the northern side by a long ridge of hard peaks, as the Teverone (2347 m.) and Cavallo Mountains (2251 m.), which determines the borderline with the Friuli Region, the county of Chies is mostly occupied by a dense wood vegetation sectioned by little valley and sideways gorges. It was the nest of the noble Endrighetto da Bongaio, a captain of Belluno (1323) and feudal lord of the Alpago. Unfortunately, the ancient castle of Bongaio, which used to majestically stand over a steep hill near Lamosano is no longer standing. On the other hand, if you wish to take a walk through the little towns of the area (Chies, Lamosano, Irrighe, and Codenzano), it is possible to visit little villages, which are centered around a church. From a tourist's point of view, besides all of the opportunities offered by the nearby mountain, we would like to remember that in Chies there is a Museum of Natural History. The museum holds thousands of remains that have been divided into five sections (zoology, phylogeny, human anatomy, geology and botanical science). The museum is one of the favorite places for those who like to learn more about this fascinating and mysterious land.
