Lamon

Accessibility
It is possible to reach Lamon by the state road of the Rolle Pass, which connects Feltre to Primiero (TN), and from which is starts at the height of Ponte Serra, the provincial road that heads toward Tesino (TN). As soon as you pass the Serra Gorge, make a left climbing the right side of the Cismon narrow valley. This town stands on a grassy terrace enclosed between Senaiga River and the Cismon River, under the flat, rocky peak of Mt. Coppolo (2058 m).Half of the people of this county live in the main town and the other half in about twenty little villages that can be very remote from the main town. Among these villages, Arina and San Donato should be remembered for their peculiar characteristics. They are about nine kilometers away from the town and they preserve some architectural standards and urban organizations typical of these areas.A few kilometers away from San Donato, in the village of Val Nuvola, over the border between the provinces of Belluno and Trento, there are the famous karstic caves, made of calcareous concretion.Just a few years ago, in this case, the untouched skeleton of Ursus spelaeus was found, now exposed in the city hall atrium. The origins of Lamon can be dated back to the pre-Roman era. In the imperial age, the Claudia Augusta Altinate Road, a military road that connected the Adriatic Sea at Quarto D'Altino to the Danube, intersected Lamon. It was built in the first century AD and a few parts of it are still visible today. There are two buildings that should be mentioned for their artistic value, the churches of S. Pietro and S. Daniele. The first one lies on the homonymous hill and its believed to have been built over the ruins of a Roman camp for its domination position over the Claudia Augusta Altinate Road. Certainly, its origins can be traced back to the medieval times, but the following restoration, especially the ones during the XVI and XVII centuries, has altered its original structure. Its architectural typology is extremely simple and it's similar to the one of other Trentino churches and some of the Belluno Valley churches. Inside, some 1500's frescoes have been partially discovered - possibly painted by Marco da Mel and a few paintings by Pietro Marascalchi, Frigimelica, Zocco and Zigantello are kept. The church also holds a precious organ dated back to the 1700's.The S. Daniele Churches rises in the center of the town. It was built in the 1600's over a pre-existing chapel and a steeple tower bell characterizes it. The inside is made of a single room covered by an arched ceiling created in the end of the 1700's. The many paintings that used to decorate the arched ceiling are now kept in the new parish and in the rectory. The collection of paintings include the painting of the altars, of unknown origins, three large paintings by the Bassano painter G.B. Volpato, the oval fresco by the Belluno painter Girolamo Moech. This church has been deconsecrated and now it is used for meeting, ceremonies and concerts. In the rectory, the precious silver Calice is also kept, which belonged to the Diacon Orso and it is one of the oldest relics in western history. It is believed to have been dated all the way back to the V-VI century, it was fortunately found in 1836 inside the crack of a rock near San Donato, but it probably came from another area. In the past, the economy of the town was based on the agricultural, more specifically, in the bean cultivation in the variety of "calonega" and "spagnolet" - and the transhumant sheep farming, which selected the Lamon sheep. This second activity has created a new farming culture - for example, the dialect typical of the Lamon shepherds. Unfortunately, nowadays not too many traces of this dialect remain. Lamon used to be the fourth largest town in its province, but the transition from agricultural world to the industrial world affected this area with a drastic reduction in its population. Therefore, activities such as sheep farming have been abandoned, even if they were the bases of the local economy for centuries. The bean cultivation is now sparse.San Donato CaveFrom Lamon to San Donato and along the Val Cengia Road, all the way to the Senaiga Stream, where we can find the entrance of the cave. It is the most accessible entrance and it is very well known to experts and fans. In Lamon and in San Donato it is possible to find experts who will guide visitors. It is strongly suggested to avoid visiting the caves alone, especially if you don't have any spelaeological experience. The visit requires about and hour and a half and it allows you to see beautiful and colorful calcareous concretions, narrow passages, streams, lakes, halls, syphons and so on. Please respect your environment and don't break stalactites or stalagmites, litter, etc. In this area rich with caves, many Ursus spaeleus remains have been found of great scientific interest.
