There are many studies that have been done on the origin of the name Limana, but on the historical point-of-view the majority of scholars agree that this name derives from the Latin "Limen-Limitis," which means separating border line. The first inhabitants probably date back to the Neolithic era, which is proven by the very old findings. Historically, the first population who settled here was probably Pre-Indo-European. The Celts, Illyrians, and Germans successively conquered Limana until 44 BC, the year in which the county entered Roman domination. But in reality, Limana was already under the Roman domination since 200 BC, because it was enrolled in the Papiria tribe. When the feud of Belluno, during the 11th century, passed under the control of the Count Bishop, Limana became a great strategic center, especially the village of San Pietro in Tuba, where there was a castle and a convent. The importance of Cesa, instead, was due to the fact that it was the river port for the city of Belluno and through which people and goods could arrive and depart. Limana has a sufficient artistic estate represented by some ancient villas and religious structures. In the local, smaller churches there are many minor artist's pieces of work that deserve to be seen. An interesting and unique Via Crucis lies over the village of Giaon all the way to the sanctuary of Madonna di Parè, with its capitals that show and demonstrate the strong popular religious beliefs. The natural environment of Valmorel is splendid; it is possible to take nice excursions in its bright green fields or perfumed woods. Limana's economy has changed over the last twenty years. It used to be an agriculture-based county, in addition to a constant migration of its inhabitants. Now, Limana is changing its physionomy. Yesterday people used to work the land, but today many factories and other services are the main economical resources. This change not only reflects in the economic advantages for the people but also in the county structure. Before, we were talking about Saint Valentine who alone can merit a trip to Limana.
