Sedico

Accessibility The first human settlement in the county of Sedico should be dated back to the Bronze Age. A Fortress over the Noal Hill in Mirabei leads us to believe its ancient origins. There are many testimonies from the Roman era, for example, in the southern part of the county there are some remains from Roman walls and its border stone blocks. The area between Peron and Stanga is where we find the most important remains of that period (a bridge and a road). There is also a significant tombstone dedicated to Zeus inside the wall of the parish in Libano. The county territory is various: in the northern part it is mostly mountainous, while the southern part has hills and plains. It has unmatched surroundings for its villages: the famous mountain chains of Sun Mountain, the Dolomite walls of Mount Schiara, the rocks and the green pastures of the mountains Talvena and Vescovà; the Pian dei Gat Plateau, at 1250 meters of altitude, where on the trail called Alta Via delle Dolomiti n.1, we can find the Bianchet refuge, the starting point of interesting excursions in the Belluno Dolomite Park. For nature lovers, we also suggest the path called "Zanardo" in La Stanga, or the excursion through the labeled paths to Mount Peron (1486 m), to Pala Alta (1933 m) or to the S. Giorgio Church (1289 m). For the same purpose, the are of Pian dei Castaldi (just over the village of Barp) is very well equipped. In the county, there are many churches which testify to the ancient and deep faith. Above the hill, over the town of Sedico, stands the S. Pietro Church. This church probably dates back to the Longobard period and it is believed to be the first Christian church in the area. Another very ancient church is the one of S. Lucia in Longano whose existence is documented since 1215. The church of S. Giorgio should also be remembered, it is just an hour away from Barp and it was built in 1695; in Bribano, there is the San Nicolò church built in 1502 by the Buzzati Brothers and now a national monument because of its splendid redwood and gold altar as well as the trilogy of paintings attributed to Agostino da Lodi. Because of the wonderful frescoes that have been recently found, we should also remember the little church of S. Lorenzo in Pasa. In any case, the most important church in the county is the parish of Sedico; inside, some valuable paintings such as "the Virgin Mary with the Baby" by Tiziano - Francesco Vecellio dated back to 1505, a painting by Pietro Marescalchi in which there is St. John the Baptist between S. Rocco and S. Caterina, a painting of S. Lucia by Antonio Lazzarini and a beautiful wooden custody by Andrea Brustolon. In the entire county, there are many remains of ancient roads. In Tappole, near Roe, there was an important bridge where the road that connected Feltre to the Agordo area; in Casoni, over the wall of an ancient construction, there is an inscription that indicated the old road for Belluno. There is also the characteristic "rope bridge" which connects Peron to S. Gottardo, here there is a huge stone which reminds us about the old legends related to the Fall of Mount Peron, which originated in the "masiere". The county of Sedico was chosen during the past centuries as the favorite place for the construction of aristocratic villas. We would like to remember villa de Manzoni in Pat, Villa Miari in Cugnac, villa Zuppani. In Roe Alte, more precisely the village of Poian, it is possible to admire the splendid villa Crotta (XVII century) which has the ancient church dedicated to saints Simone and Giuda attached to it. The little center of Landris should be visited for its characteristic villas Rudio and Miari- Giacomin. Also in Libano, two villas can be found, one that dates back to the XVII century and the other to the XVIII century.
