Sospirolo has a very ancient origin. Traces of objects from the Bronze Age have been found in Val Falcina. The presence of Romans is also very well documented. In Oregne, at the end of the last century, a few Latin tombs were discovered; in Mis, in the churches of S. Michele ai Pascoli and S. Giuliana, two Roman tombstones in white calcareous stone have been found. During the Roman area, this country depended on the Municipium of Feltre, then it was dominated by Carrararesi, then Visconti and then, from 1404 'til 1797, by the Venetians. During the Napoleon period, Sospirolo was under the direct jurisdiction of Belluno. After the treaties of Campoformio (1797) the town was given to Austria, it was finally returned to Italy in 1866. Amongst the most important "structures" in the Sospirolo County, in addition to the little church of San Gottardo (now a national monument), we should mention the Certosa of Vedana, which was created in the mid XII century as a hospice and then given to Certosini monks of the order of S. Brunone by the Capitolo of Belluno. This is how one of the most famous Italian Charterhouses was started. It was disturbed in its silence only the fire of 1695, which caused a lot of damage. In 1769, the Venetian Republic ordered that the monks were to be exiled from Vedana. The convent was finally restored in 1882 when it returned to being a property of the S.Brunome order.
There are many other interesting places in the Sospirolo area: all of the Sun Mountains, a mountain group which still conserves its unexplored nature in contrast to all of the well known environments; the Mis Lake, with its pure water, where it is still possible to find freshwater shrimp and other kinds of fish and crustaceans that are very sensitive to any forms of pollution.
