Sovramonte

Accessibility From Feltre to the Sovramonte Plain along the state road in the direction of Fiera di Primiero (20 km); once you pass the bridge Oltra over the Cismon, make a right and climb on the left side of the narrow valley up to an open grassy balcony dominated by the huge shapes of Mt. Vallata (2167 m) and Mt. Avena (1454 m). Once you pass the village of Sorbiva on the western margin of the plateau, you'll reach the flat country in the middle of which there is the little S. Giorgio Hill with the homonymous church and the old cemetery. The church is amongst the most important of cult places in the Feltre area. Inside, there are many frescoes by a pretty good student of Tomaso da Modena (about 1352). The painting still needs to be examined and understood together with the ones by Andrea Nasocchio (1514), that were laid over the first ones (the original table of the major altar is by Marco da Mel, derived from Lorenzo Luzzo, and now it is held in the new parish of Sorriva). On the celebration day of the saint patron (April 23) Sorriva celebrates and offers everyone warm soup as a memory of the pest epidemic that afflicted the town in 1631. The main center of the Sovramonte area is Servo. The town lies around the old S. Maria Church, north of the plains and where the land starts to climb the grassy walls of Mt. Vallazza (2167 m). S. Maria is a gothic church that has been remodeled inside. There are important fresco remains from the XIV-XV and XVI centuries painted by Marco da Mel, Frigimelica, and so on. In Zorzoi, at the peak of the deep gorge of the Cismon Valley, stood the castle of Schener, which guarded the obligatory passage toward the Primiero (only the remains are left). The road climbs the Mount Vallazza side and reaches the villages of Salzen and Aune (in this church, there is a painting by Marascalchi). Just before reaching Aune, there was a sign indicating how to access the ancient Roman road Claudia Augusta that could be followed by foot or on horse. The flat passage of Croce d'Aune (1011 m) between Mt. Avena (1454 m) and the southern crest of the Feltrine Mountains allows you to go from Sovramonte to the Feltre gorge. On the right hand side of the road to Fiera di Primiero, at the end of the Rosna Valley, there is an important Paleolithic site, which consists of a burial ground, of the epigravettiana age that dates back 12,000 years and is located in a natural hall.
